Floor levelling: drying time and preparation

Levelling is the foundation of a perfectly flat floor. But how long until you can walk on it again — and when can the new floor go down? And what do you need to prepare yourself?

In short

  • Many levelling compounds can be walked on after a few hours; fast versions often after 2 to 4 hours.
  • Before PVC can go down, the compound must be sufficiently dry: with a layer of around 3 mm often 24 to 48 hours, depending on the product.
  • Layer thickness, temperature, humidity and ventilation determine how quickly it dries.
  • The product data sheet and a moisture measurement are decisive — not the clock.

What is floor levelling?

When levelling, we apply a liquid, self-levelling compound to the subfloor. The compound flows out into a flat, smooth surface. This creates a base on which a PVC or laminate floor lies perfectly flat. Also read why flatness matters so much.

The steps

  1. Removing the old floor — carpet, laminate, cork or PVC out.
  2. Sanding and vacuuming — adhesive residue and loose parts removed, the floor dust-free.
  3. Priming — the primer ensures good adhesion and prevents the subfloor from drawing moisture out of the compound.
  4. Mixing and pouring — mixed in the right ratio and spread evenly.
  5. Drying and checking — then we check the flatness and the subfloor is ready.

How long does levelling compound take to dry?

MomentCommon indication*
WalkableAfter a few hours; fast compounds often after 2 – 4 hours
Ready for PVC (layer approx. 3 mm)Often after 24 – 48 hours
Thicker layers or cold/damp conditionsLonger — per data sheet and moisture measurement
*Indications from practice. Drying time differs per product; the manufacturer’s data sheet is decisive.

Because PVC hardly lets moisture through, the compound must be sufficiently dry before the floor is glued down. Laying too early is one of the most common mistakes.

What determines the drying time?

  • Layer thickness — a thicker layer needs longer.
  • Temperature — in a cold room the compound dries more slowly.
  • Humidity and ventilation — humid air slows drying; draughts and bright sunlight straight after pouring are not good either.
  • Product — there are standard and fast-drying compounds.
  • Subfloor — a damp or very absorbent subfloor affects the result.

How to prepare your home

  • Empty the room(s) as much as possible; we discuss in advance any cupboards that stay.
  • Make sure the room is at a normal room temperature.
  • Agree how you will get around the room: the fresh compound must not be walked on for a while.
  • Have underfloor heating? Discuss in advance how it should be set.
  • Keep pets and children out of the room while it dries.

We include the drying time in the overall planning, so the floor can be laid as soon as the subfloor is ready.

Common mistakes

  • Laying the floor too early, so the adhesive doesn’t bond properly.
  • Not priming or priming incorrectly, resulting in air bubbles or poor adhesion.
  • Leaving adhesive residue, which later shows through.
  • Applying too thick or too thin a layer for what the subfloor needs.

Repair work happens too: in Mildam someone else’s work first had to be repaired before we could level. Read more about our approach on the floor levelling page.

How long must levelling compound dry before laying PVC?

With a layer of around 3 mm often 24 to 48 hours, but it differs per product, layer thickness and conditions. The data sheet and a moisture measurement are decisive.

When can I walk on the levelling compound again?

Many compounds can be walked on carefully after a few hours; fast-drying versions often after 2 to 4 hours.

Can I speed up drying?

A normal room temperature and gentle ventilation help. Avoid draughts, bright sunlight and high heating straight after pouring: the top then dries too quickly.
